Ahead of the upcoming Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) event the weekend of September 7th, representatives from the Sioux Falls chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace gave a presentation at the September 3rd, 2024 meeting of the Holy Spirit Knights of Columbus. Nicki and Eli Walker, leaders of the Sioux Falls chapter, shared their inspiring journey and the impactful work they are doing to ensure that no child in their community sleeps on the floor, through the organization.
A Mission Born from Compassion
The Walkers began their mission in November 2023, driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in their community. “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town…” is the motto of SHP, highlighting the urgent need for beds among children in the Sioux Falls metro area. With a population of 300,000, it is estimated that about 3% of children do not have a bed, translating to a significant number of kids in need.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Achievements
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily closed their chapter, Nicki and Eli have made remarkable progress. They have tackled a backlog of 300 bed requests and recently delivered 17 beds over a single weekend. Since reopening the local chapter in August, they have delivered a total of 20 beds, all made from basic materials like 2x4s, 2x6s, and 1x4s, allowing volunteers of all ages to participate in the building process.
Community Support and Involvement
The Sioux Falls chapter has received tremendous support from the community, including various Councils of the Knights of Columbus and other local organizations. They recently hosted a successful bed build event and are planning another one on Saturday in cooperation with the Holy Spirit Knights of Columbus. The Walkers emphasized the importance of community involvement in their mission, encouraging everyone to participate in bed builds and deliveries.
Nationwide Impact and Local Goals
Sleep in Heavenly Peace has delivered over 200,000 beds nationwide since its inception in 2012. The Sioux Falls chapter aims to build and deliver around 50 beds per month when fully up to speed. They have already built 100 beds and purchased 93 mattresses, all of which will go to local children in need.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Future Goals
Operating without an indoor facility poses significant challenges, especially during the winter months. The chapter relies on donations and volunteer efforts to continue their work. Their goal is to secure an indoor facility to ensure they can build and deliver beds year-round.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Nicki and Eli expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support they have received and shared heartwarming stories of children who have benefited from receiving beds. They encouraged everyone to participate in future events and help make a difference in the lives of children in their community. At the end of the presentation the Holy Spirit Knights of Columbus presented the Walkers with a donation to the SHP Sioux Falls Chapter.
